Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Pandit Damodar Keshav Datar, affectionately known as D. K. Datar, was born on October 14, 1932, in Kurundwad, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, India. His journey into the world of music began under the guidance of his brother Narayanrao, who introduced him to the enchanting realm of melodies. Young D. K. Datar embarked on his musical odyssey with early lessons in the art of the violin, under the tutelage of Pandit Vighneshwar Shastri. These formative years set the stage for a lifelong commitment to the world of music.
A Profound Connection with Music
While Datar successfully completed his Bachelor’s Degree, his heart was unwaveringly drawn towards the world of music. He made the bold decision to make music his full-time profession, a choice that would define his life’s purpose and bring him international acclaim
Musical Influences and Technique
D. K. Datar’s journey was further enriched by his association with his uncle, the renowned Hindustani classical vocalist D. V. Paluskar. Under the mentorship of Paluskar, Datar honed his skills and adapted his violin-playing technique to align with the vocal-dominated style of Indian classical music. He embraced the khyal style of the Gwalior gharana, mastering its nuances with dedication and finesse.

D. K. Datar’s musical prowess transcended boundaries. In addition to excelling in the khyal style, he showcased his virtuosity by performing bhajans, thumris, and natya sangeet styles with equal grace and flair. His versatility as a violinist enchanted audiences across the globe.

He embarked on tours that took him to Europe, the United States, Canada, Germany, Iceland, and Japan, where he enthralled audiences with his soulful melodies. Musical Contributions in Film
D. K. Datar’s artistry also found a place in the world of cinema. He was employed by the Films Division of India, where he lent his musical expertise to numerous documentary films, providing captivating background scores that enhanced the cinematic experience.
Honors and Recognition
D. K. Datar’s lifelong dedication to music earned him the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Hindustani Music in 1995. In 2004, he was conferred with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of music.
A Fond Farewell
On October 10, 2018, D. K. Datar passed away peacefully at his residence in Goregaon, Mumbai, having left an indelible mark on the world of music. His legacy lives on through his timeless melodies and the inspiration he continues to provide to aspiring musicians worldwide.
Achievements
“Padmashree” (Padma Award) was conferred upon him by The President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in January, 2004 for his valuable contribution in Indian classical music.
In addition to many other honours, he is the recipient of “SANGEET NATAK ACADEMY AWARD” from Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the president of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, 1996.
Honoured by Shri P. C. Alexander, the Governor of Maharashtra at Raj Bhavan for “VASANTRAO NAIK PRATISHTHAN”. Mumbai, 1997.
He is recipient of Maharashtra state Government’s Award (Cultural Dept.) from Shree Narayan Rane, chief Minister in 1998 for his valuable contribution to music.
Honoured by President of Iceland in 1998.
Recipient of Smt. Manik Verma Puraskar in April 2005.
Awarded Kumar Gandharva Award for the high lighted contribution in Classical Music in April 2007.
Performed in the International Music Festival, “Raljkevic Arts Festival” 1998 at Iceland.
Like many other universities he was invited twice to deliver Lecture-demonstrations on ‘Violin” by Pittsburg University (USA), in 1992 and in the March 2002.

Recipient of “SURSAMMAN” award from Sangeet Kala Samman samiti Delhi in 2008.
Valuable contribution in “Melody & Rhythm”. Directed by Pt. Ravi Shankar.
Leading recording companies like “Venus”, Super Cassettes”, “Magna sound”, “Sa r e ga ma“ and ”Rhythm House” have recorded Pt. Datar on cassettes and C. Ds.
Had concerts in U.S.A., Canada, U. K., Europe., Iceland, Japan, U.A.E., Nepal and Singapore many times.
Family
Dr Sudha D Datar
Dr. Sudha Damodar Datar MD; DGO; DFP, well known gynaecologist for western suburb, practicing at Goregaon – Mumbai for last 50 years.
Owned hospital Yashada surgical & maternity home.
Fond of music especially violin since childhood. Learned violin from Mr. Sanzagiri at the age of 14 years. Famous writer P L Deshpande recommended & introduced her to Pt. D. K. Datar after listening to her performance.

- Represented All India Radio competition at Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujrath.
Dr. Nikhil D Datar
Dr. Nikhil Datar is Pandit D. K. Datar’s elder son. He is a renowned Gynecologist, a Lawyer and an activist. His single-handed legal battle in the Supreme court paved the way to amendment of the abortion Law. He was interviewed in the famous show Satyamev Jayate for his exemplary work for rape survivors. He relentlessly takes up issues of women’s rights and health rights. He has received many international awards for his work.
His wife Dr. Smita Datar is a General Physician and a Writer. She has won many state level awards for her books including a Biography of Padmashree Pt. D. K. Datar. Both Dr. Nikhil and Dr. Smita are offering their valuable participation in social service.
Their son Dr. Archit is a scientist in the USA and has done pioneering research work in the field of chemical engineering. Archit is into singing classical vocal and light music. Daughter Ojasee is a Solicitor and working in London. She is a trained Kathak Dancer.
Dr. Shekhar D Datar
Pt. D K Datarjees younger son Dr. Shekhar Datar is doctor by profession. He has completed MBBS & MD Radiology from Seth G S Medical college & KEM hospital. He has also completed DMRE & DNB in radiology. He is currently practicing at Goregaon & is director of Skylark diagnostic centre.
He has keen interest in vocal music. He is winner for state level doctor vocal completion for 6 years. He adds to his credit album PITA by T series.
His wife Dr. Swati Datar is Pathologist is also practicing at Goregaon Mumbai. She too has interest in vocal music.
His daughter Riya is in 1st year LLB with prestigious Government law college – Mumbai. Son Parth is in 12th standard commerce stream.
